SMART goals have been around the block since 1981 for a reason, they work as a framework that helps you get clear on your goals and when you want to have them accomplished.

Just to clarify here SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Timely. (If you missed the post last week about SMART goals you can check that out here.)

There are a few variations of the acronym, but that’s the most applicable for lifestyle changes.

Over the years there have been several variations added to the original with SMART goals becoming SMARTER, SMARRT, and SMARTTA.

Those are great for business purposes, but what about the other areas of your life?

Well, today I’d like to introduce you to a new variation of smart goal setting that is going to go above and beyond in helping you overcome life.

Ready to set some goals and create an actionable plan that’ll change your world?

You may have smart goals, but are they a smartypants?

Are you ready to be a SMARTYPANTS?

Yep, you’ve learned about SMART goals and now it’s time to get the rest of the story.

You need deep goals that motivate you and actual steps to follow when life gets hard. And we both know it will, so we better be ready for it.

In order for your goals to propel you down the path on your journey to overcoming life you need more than just basic goal setting. You also need YPANTS!

Plus, it’s just kinda fun to say SMARTYPANTS goals.

So here’s a recap of the SMART goals we worked on in the last post as an example: You want to use fitness and nutrition, to lose 2 sizes, so that you can fit into a fabulous dress in two months for a party.

And now the breakdown for the rest of SMARTYPANTS for you.

Y is for Why?

Learn how to find your why and create better goals.

The whole purpose of smart goals is to get you where you want to be, but what’s critical in goal setting is figuring out why you want it in the first place.

And why is this so critical? Well, you’re why is what is going to keep you motivated. Your goal is just a reflection of that deep down why.

Here we’re digging deep and looking for the very base reason that you want to be able to wear that fabulous dress to the party.

So why would ya?

Because I want to look fabulous, duh.

We need to keep digging.

And why do you want to look fab for this party?

-Because I want that feeling of being able to turn heads when I walk into the room.

Uh huh, keep going, why?

-Because I need to feel confident about myself again.

Now, we’re really getting somewhere. So why do you feel you need your confidence back, what happened? (This is where the magic happens.)

-Because I’ve had 2 kids and I gave up my career to raise them. I haven’t taken care of myself like I should and I feel like I’ve lost myself along the way. You see this party is actually a reunion of sorts and I want people to remember me the way I used to be as well as the woman I’ve grown to become.

I told ya it was magic. There’s always some underlying need nestled in a goal that looks like a want.

It also works for performance and health related goals as well.

P is for Prioritize, Plan, & Prepare

You’ve got the groundwork laid out and it’s time to move on to the P’s.

The first is prioritize. In our scenario above you can see that the true motivation underneath the aesthetic goal is confidence. So, confidence building is the priority over the next two months. But don’t worry, you’ll still work on fitting into that fabulous dress.

In the second P you’re going to become a planning rockstar. By creating a plan that will encompass the mental, emotional, and physical aspects you’ll be the belle of the ball at your reunion. You’ll plan out exactly what you’re going to do for each step of the journey to accomplish you smart goal and your smartypants goal together.

Last, you’ll prepare. Don’t get stuck in this phase for too long though. You want to quickly decide what you’ll need for your journey, as well as what you actually need to eliminate. This step will free up your mental and emotional energy to deal with the journey ahead.

A is for Accountability & Support

Find accountability & support to create better goals.

I’m going to level with you here.

Attaining your goals can be as simple or as complicated as you make it.

But here’s the thing, it won’t always be easy.

You’re going to struggle. You’re going to fall. And you’re going to need accountability and support to help you get back up again.

This will happen no matter what your goal may be.

I’ll tell you that I’ve definitely experienced this and it’s not fun. I’ve surrounded myself with key people though that I can reach out to when I need a helping hand or advice. Or even someone to talk me off the ledge of a panic attack. (Yes, I’m completely serious.)

You’ll need to find your accountability and support system too. And I’d definitely recommend that you do this early in your journey.

N is for Note & Assess

Learn how notes & assessments create better goals.

Taking notes and assessing your progress make or break your journey to your goal. This helps you know whether or not your efforts are leading you forward or causing you to stall your progress.

What should you take notes on? Think of this as your travel log book. You want to note what you’re doing, how you’re feeling, what you’re struggling with, etc. This way when you do your assessments you’ll know whether to keep it up or changes paths altogether.

As far as assessment goes, you really could track just about anything and everything, but I recommend that you keep it simple. You’ll need some form of measurement (weight is not a great indicator of progress) for each of these factors: your body, your nutrition, your performance, your mental and emotional state, and your sleep.

Other than that it’s usually just an over complication and we want simple.

T is for Trial & Error

Change is a science & an art. See how trial & error create better goals.

Based on your notes and assessments you’re going to find that you’ll go through ups and downs along the path.

This is completely normal and expected. Remember, we’re shooting for simple, but I never told you it would be easy. There’s a big difference.

Change is uncomfortable and you’ll find yourself second guessing everything when a number goes up that should have gone down.

It happens. You’ll want to throw your whole plan out the window and start over again, but that’s unnecessary and sometimes dangerous thinking.

Instead, I want you to stay the path just a little while longer. See if you can break through that little plateau.

If the numbers still aren’t improving after 2-3 weeks, then it might be time to make a change.

Although there is a science to reaching your goals, there’s also an art. It’s a dance to get the body and mind to realize that what you’re doing is good for it.

I’ve said many times that the body is fascinating because while it’s incredibly smart, it’s also incredibly dumb at the same time.

So, if your body is not cooperating you’re going to make one change at a time. Yes, I just said one.

That way you’re not throwing the baby out with the bath water.

S is for Strategize

Learn how to strategize for your next steps after you reach your goal.

Umm…have you thought about what happens at the end of your current path?

This is the part where most people fail.

I don’t want that to happen to you.

Your last step is to strategize what happens after you meet your goal.

You see, most people will just go back to the way things were before and let life get away from them.

Ya do know that’s insanity right? You can’t just slip back into your old habits and expect a different outcome than you had before.

Now think about what you want your life to look like after you reach your goal. What do you want to be able to do next?

I bet you guessed what I’m going to tell you.

You get to start a new smart goal and a new path. It’s all about the journey, not the destination.
